Most "Vail to Steamboat" results online send you the wrong way, over Hwy 9, or worse, way around through Denver. There's a better way. And it's the way locals actually drive it.

About 100 miles. Around 2.5 hours. Wolcott to Steamboat via Hwy 131.

The Route

One exit off the interstate, then about 80 miles of two-lane ranch country up to Steamboat. No mountain passes to worry about year-round. Just open country.

Landmarks Along the Way

4 Eagle Ranch

Right out of Wolcott on the left. Big working ranch and event venue, known for weddings and the Vail-area horse crowd.

State Bridge

Historic spot on the Colorado River. The Trough Road and Colorado River Road both peel off here heading east toward Kremmling, old dirt roads through the canyon, popular with rafters and fly fishermen.

Yampa, The Stop You Have to Make

About halfway up Hwy 131, you hit Yampa, population around 400. Park at Montgomery's General Merchandise, which has been there forever. The wooden facade, the "GROCERIES" sign in gold paint, the Coors signs in the window, this is the Colorado that used to be everywhere and barely exists anymore.

Walk in and the first thing you see is the gun shop right up front. Past that, the general store opens up, groceries, hardware, gifts. I grabbed a Slim Jim. Worst Slim Jim of my life. But the old guy behind the counter was funny as hell and full of stories, and that's what you actually come for. Guns, groceries, gifts, and a Slim Jim that's been on the shelf since the Clinton administration. That's Yampa.

Oak Creek

Old coal mining town just south of Steamboat. Solid lunch options, zero pretense. Worth a stop on the way up or down.

20 Mile Road

Turnoff west of Steamboat heading out toward Hayden and Craig. Locals' shortcut, ranch country, a whole other ride for another day.

Howelsen Hill

Coming into town from the south on Hwy 131, you'll see Howelsen rising on the north end of Steamboat across the Yampa River, North America's oldest continuously operated ski area, opened in 1915. Where every Olympic ski jumper Steamboat has produced learned to fly.

Arriving in Steamboat

Hwy 131 rolls right into the south end of Steamboat past Stagecoach Reservoir (worth a pull-off for the view), then through the meadows into town. You hit Lincoln Avenue, the main drag, and you're there.

So How Far Is Vail to Steamboat Springs?

About 100 miles. Around 2.5 hours. Via I-70 to Wolcott (Exit 157), then Hwy 131 north all the way in.

It's longer than the crow flies. But it's the prettiest way to do it, and the only sensible way unless you're driving in the dead of winter with bad conditions on 131.

Two valleys. One road. Worth the ride.
