The Closest Airport
to the Mountain.
No Contest.
Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) is the Vail airport, the closest commercial field to the mountain. If you're looking for a Vail airport shuttle, or a car from the Vail airport to Vail itself, this is the route. EGE sits just 35 miles west of Vail at an elevation of 6,548 feet, and the ride to your hotel or condo takes roughly 40 minutes on I-70 East. No mountain passes. No tunnels. No two-hour slogs through ski traffic.
American Airlines and United Airlines serve EGE with direct flights from major hubs including Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago O'Hare, Newark, Los Angeles, and Miami. During ski season (mid-December through early April), the flight schedule expands significantly with additional nonstop routes that make EGE the smartest way into Vail.
For our family, EGE is the home airport, we live 20 minutes away. George can be curbside before your bags hit the carousel. There's no dispatch center and no algorithm deciding who picks you up. When you book with us, you know exactly who's driving.

Why EGE Over Denver?
Flying into Eagle cuts your ground transfer from two-plus hours down to about forty minutes, and skips every mountain pass on I-70. DIA has more flights and often lower fares, but it's a 120-mile mountain drive. We serve both, and we'll happily tell you which makes sense for your trip.
Gypsum to Vail.
A Tour Up the Valley.
You land at EGE, which is actually down in Gypsum, just west of the Costco, and the first thing you notice is how easy it is. We roll out of the airport, through the Town of Eagle, and pick up I-70 East. From there it's a straight, gentle climb up-valley to Vail. No passes, no tunnel, no white-knuckle grades. About forty minutes, door to door.
It's a pretty stretch of road, too. Just east of Eagle, off to the south, the Diamond Star Ranch spreads across the hills above Brush Creek, a 10,500-acre cattle-and-horse ranch that's been worked since the 1890s, much of it now protected as conservation land. Near Wolcott the golf gets serious: Red Sky Ranch sits off to the south, two championship courses, a Tom Fazio and a Greg Norman, while Eagle Springs is tucked up on the north side, an ultra-private club that's about as tough to get on as any course in the valley. Wolcott is also where Highway 131 peels off to the north, the back way to Steamboat Springs.
Past Wolcott you'll pass Vail Christian, and then you're coming into Edwards. Just before the Edwards exit, on your right, is the Eaton Ranch, the family name of Earl Eaton, the uranium prospector who found Vail Mountain back in 1957 and co-founded the resort with Pete Seibert. If you've skied Blue Sky Basin, Earl's Bowl is named for him. Through Edwards you've got Battle Mountain High School, the Singletree neighborhood, and Cordillera spread across the hills above, a gated community with a handful of championship courses: a Fazio down low, plus the Jack Nicklaus Summit and Hale Irwin Mountain courses up top. George helped build one of the clubhouses up there years ago.
Then it comes quick: Arrowhead, Bachelor Gulch, Beaver Creek, the Avon exit. Through Eagle-Vail, there's a nice public golf course right off the highway, past our own exit in West Vail, and you're in Vail. We pull right up to your door. George & Kyla

A Bit of Vail History
Earl Eaton, an Eagle-area prospector, climbed the ridge above Gore Creek in 1957, saw the back bowls, and brought Pete Seibert up to look. Vail opened in 1962. When Blue Sky Basin opened in 2000, the two new bowls were named Pete's Bowl and Earl's Bowl, after the men who found and built the mountain.

How long does the drive from EGE to Vail take?
About 40 minutes in normal conditions. It's a gentle up-valley climb on I-70 East, no Vail Pass, no Eisenhower Tunnel, so it's far quicker and calmer than the ~2-hour drive from Denver.
